Kerala experienced one of its most peaceful weather years in 2025. The State reported only five extreme rainfall events, defined as over 204 mm of rain in 24 hours. This is a big drop from 32 and 33 such events in 2018 and 2019, years marked by heavy floods. These five events occurred during the pre-monsoon and southwest monsoon periods between May and August. Both the southwest and northeast monsoons brought less rain than usual, with 13% and 21% deficits, respectively. 2024 had harsher weather including six heatwave days in April and a deadly landslide in Wayanad claiming 254 lives. In contrast, the summer of 2025 was milder with temperatures near or just above normal. According to IMD director V.K. Mini, cooler weather in December was helped by calmer seas and La Niña conditions, with some days having clear skies warming the atmosphere. Kerala also avoided winter-like conditions in 2024 but saw temperatures dip to and below the long-term average for two weeks in December 2025. Experts say that compared to recent years of extreme weather, including the devastating 2018 floods, 2025 will be remembered for its calm and stable seasonal weather.
