Ukraine Denies Russia’s Drone Attack Claim on Putin’s Home, Cites No Evidence
December 30, 2025
Ukraine has strongly denied Russia’s claim that Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s state residence in Novgorod region. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said on X that Russia “still hasn’t provided any plausible evidence” to support this claim. He called Russia’s accusation a “signature tactic” to accuse others of what they plan to do themselves. Sybiha expressed surprise that Emirati, Indian, and Pakistani leaders voiced concerns about the reported attack, which he said "never happened," especially because these countries did not react officially when a Russian missile hit a Ukrainian government building on September 7, 2025. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said the night before that Russian air defenses shot down 91 drones targeting Putin’s residence. He called it “state terrorism” and warned of retaliation against Ukraine, adding that targets were already chosen. No damage or casualties resulted from the reported attack, and Russia shared no photos or proof. The incident was reported a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump in Florida to discuss a 20-point peace plan. Trump said he was “very angry” on hearing the news from Putin but admitted the attack’s reality was uncertain. Trump said, “I learned about it from President Putin today” and added, “It’s a delicate period of time. This is not the right time.” Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary, described the talk between Trump and Putin as “positive.”
