At least 13 people were killed when a train derailed in Oaxaca, Mexico. The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was built to create a new cargo route and boost growth in the region. President Claudia Sheinbaum said 98 of the 250 passengers were injured, with five in critical condition. She said she would visit Oaxaca to meet the victims and "rigorously clarify what caused this accident." The train was a key project of ex-president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as Amlo. Another project, the Mayan Train, aimed to boost the southeast’s economy with a rail loop around the Yucatán Peninsula. Both projects were built quickly and overseen by the Mexican military, raising safety concerns. This derailment is the third on the Interoceanic Train this year, including a crash with a truck earlier this month. The Mayan Train has had two non-fatal derailments. The opposition leader Alejandro Moreno called to pause all such projects for a full safety audit, tweeting, "This tragedy … demands immediate answers." Sheinbaum said, "We will be very responsible in the construction and operation [of these projects], as we have always been."
