Mysuru Commuters Protest Old BMTC Buses Used by KSRTC, Cite Pollution and Poor Condition
December 29, 2025
Bus passengers in Mysuru are unhappy with KSRTC using old buses once run by BMTC for city routes. They say many buses are old, dirty, and pollute the air. "Many of the buses plying city routes are visibly old, uncomfortable, and inadequately maintained," said locals. Amogh A., a Mysuru resident, told The Hindu, "These buses are in very bad condition and not up to the mark. Some of them still carry the BMTC logo and have not even been repainted." He added, "Seats were tattered and several buses emitted thick smoke." He accused the buses of being mostly old BS-III models that cause pollution. Another commuter, Sarthak K.M., claimed, "It is unfair that used BMTC buses are sent here. Mysuru is a developed city and needs new buses. Bengaluru gets new electric buses, but Mysuru is given old, polluting vehicles." A Right to Information request revealed KSRTC currently runs about 267 BMTC buses across Karnataka’s city routes. KSRTC said these buses undergo extensive refurbishment before re-entering service, including engine repair, new seat covers, and body revamps. "All refurbished buses are inspected and must get fitness certificates from Regional Transport Offices," a KSRTC official stated. Around 1,520 buses have been refurbished across the state, and the programme has earned awards for innovation. KSRTC Managing Director Akram Pasha said only 25 of these BMTC buses serve Mysuru currently and assured the public of their safety and fitness. "Services are closely monitored," he said. Despite KSRTC claims, Mysuru commuters remain concerned about comfort and pollution from these older buses.
