On December 29, 2025, the vehicle of Election Commission of India's special roll observer, C. Murugan, was attacked during a protest in Magrahat, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The agitators, mostly women, blocked the car's exit route and hit the bonnet and windows as police tried to clear them. The driver's door handle was nearly torn off. The protest occurred during a Special Indigenous Roll (SIR) hearing at Shirakol High School. Protesters complained about "unplanned implementation" of the SIR exercise, claiming that sick, elderly, and pregnant voters were forced to appear at hearings. Local leaders, including TMC-run Zilla Parishad president Mujibar Rahaman Mollah, led the protest demanding that their party’s Booth Level Agents-2 (BLA2) be allowed inside the hearings. Rahaman said, "It wasn't a political agitation. It was a protest of ordinary people, people with physical disabilities, sickness, elderly indisposed citizens and even pregnant women, who are being tortured by the ECI in the name of conducting hearings." Murugan said, "I am here to do a job assigned to me by the Election Commission, and I will complete that task, no matter the attempted disruptions." He did not comment on any personal security fears, leaving that to the authorities. A Commission source revealed special police protection requests were ignored. Protesters said they opposed the SIR and wanted central government payments for rural work and housing resumed. This was not the first time Murugan faced protests; similar gherao incidents happened earlier in Falta and Haldarpara. The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s office will seek a detailed report on the event and submit it to the Election Commission.
