A five-year-old boy named Hinata Goto died on Sunday at Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort in Hokkaido, Japan. Hinata's arm got trapped in a ski travelator as he was about to step off. The machine's safety system did not stop the travelator. The device only stopped when the boy's mother pressed the emergency stop button. Rescue workers took 40 minutes to dismantle part of the machine and free the unconscious boy. He was later declared dead at the hospital. The travelator, installed six years ago, is about 30 meters long and connects the resort's car park to the ski slopes. It has no handrails. Resort staff said the safety mechanism worked earlier that day. Some visitors had reported being scared and stumbling on the same travelator. A regular user told Asahi Shimbun, "Even as an adult, there are times when I think, 'It's a little scary'." Police are investigating whether professional negligence, including maintenance or manufacturing problems, caused the accident. The resort apologized and promised to take action to prevent future incidents. Hokkaido is Japan's ski capital and hosts millions of visitors every winter for ski holidays.
