On Sunday, December 28, an unidentified gang, said to be Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers, attacked the house of Rajani Thekke Thayyil. Rajani is a member of Vadakara block panchayat. Police found an unexploded steel bomb at her home after the attack. Sources say that Rajani accidentally voted for a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate. This vote helped the UDF win control in the Vadakara block panchayat election. The election ended in a tie with both Left Democratic Front (LDF) and UDF winning seven seats each. Rajani is a Rashtriya Janata Dal activist who ran under the LDF banner. She was suspended for six months after the accidental vote for UDF candidate Kottayil Radhakrishnan. Police have registered a case and continue to investigate the incident.
