Two primary suspects in the murder of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi have fled Bangladesh and are believed to be in India, a top Dhaka police officer said on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Hadi, aged 32, was shot in the head on December 12 during an election campaign in Dhaka. He was flown to Singapore for treatment but died on December 18. Additional Police Commissioner S N Md Nazrul Islam said the suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, crossed into Meghalaya, India, with help from locals. "They entered India via the Haluaghat border. A man named Purti first received them, then a taxi driver Sami took them to Tura city," he said. Police report that Purti and Sami have been detained by Indian authorities. Bangladesh is working hard to bring the suspects back. "We are communicating with Indian officials to ensure their arrest and extradition," Islam added. No exact date was given for when the suspects fled. Indian officials have not yet responded to Bangladesh's claims. Sharif Osman Hadi was a youth leader from Inquilab Moncho and a parliamentary candidate for the February 12 elections. He played a key role in the protests that led to the fall of the former Awami League government in 2024. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police said the investigation is close to completion, expecting to file charges within seven to ten days. Eleven people have been arrested, with six confessing in court. The murder was planned in advance. Police also recovered two pistols used in the crime, now under scientific study. They found the motorcycle used in the attack, and a cheque for Tk 218 crore linked to the murder funding has been seized. DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali called the killing “mysterious,” suggesting multiple people were involved. All law enforcement agencies, including police, Border Guard Bangladesh, and Rapid Action Battalion, have been tasked to find the masterminds.
