More than 25 people, mostly students, were injured when a mob attacked a concert in Faridpur on Friday night. The concert was to feature famous Bangladeshi singer James, known in India for Bollywood hits like 'Bheegi Bheegi' and 'Alvida'. Local police said around 20,000 to 25,000 people gathered outside the venue after news spread that James had arrived. The event was meant only for registered former and current students. The organisers were blamed for poor planning. They did not expect such a large crowd. The concert was cancelled around 10:30 pm to control the situation. According to Faridpur police, some outsiders tried climbing the boundary wall and began throwing bricks at the audience and stage. The chaos grew when a few individuals managed to enter the school premises but were stopped by students. James’s spokesperson Rubaiyat Thakur Robin called the incident "complete mismanagement and failure of the organisers." The band Nagarbaul was already at Faridpur but left after the concert was called off. Srabanya Touhida, the event anchor, said, "It was terrifying. Even after returning to Dhaka, the trauma doesn't seem to go away." The attack reflects a worrying trend of rising insecurity for artists in Bangladesh. Author Taslima Nasreen condemned the violence, saying, "Today, jihadists did not allow the renowned singer James to perform at an event." Nasreen added that other celebrated musicians like Siraj Ali Khan and Arman Khan avoided Bangladesh recently due to threats and unsafe conditions for cultural performers. The injured were admitted to a local hospital, including the convener of the reunion committee of Faridpur Zilla School. This incident further damages Bangladesh's image as a safe place for artists and raises concerns about growing intolerance towards music and cultural events in the country.
