About 19 undocumented Haitian migrants were arrested in southern Quebec this week. They crossed the Canada-US border on foot in extreme cold. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began searching after the US Border Patrol reported the crossing. After an hour, officers found 15 people hiding in woods near Havelock, Quebec, around 53 kilometres south of Montreal. "The search continued until about 10:30 p.m., in extreme cold, to find the remaining individuals," the RCMP said in a statement. The migrants, aged 1 to 60, have all asked for asylum. Eight were taken to hospital. Six needed treatment for frostbite, and two children were hospitalized as a precaution. A man believed to be the group's driver was arrested under the Customs Act. "People who cross illegally are often poorly equipped and inadequately dressed for the weather. The terrain is also very difficult to access in certain areas," police said. Havelock is about 20 km from the now-closed Roxham Road crossing. This crossing had seen tens of thousands of asylum seekers enter Canada before it closed in 2023. The arrests have sparked debate as some Canadians worry these asylum seekers will stay in taxpayer-funded hotels.
