Italy Arrests Nine for Raising €7 Million for Hamas Using False Aid Claims
December 27, 2025
Italian police have arrested nine people accused of raising around €7 million (£6 million) for Hamas over two years. The suspects collected money claiming it was humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians. But police say the funds went to Hamas through a "complex fundraising system." Along with the arrests, over €8 million (£7 million) in assets were seized. Italy's counter-terror and financial police worked together on the case. The probe started after Hamas' attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. Investigators found suspicious financial transactions by the suspects. The fundraising center was based in Genoa with branches in Milan. Authorities state that 71% of donations meant for Gaza's civilians were diverted to Hamas. This financed Hamas's military wing and helped families of suicide bombers and terror detainees. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi named Mohammad Hannoun as a key suspect. Hannoun is the president of the Palestinian Association in Italy and called the accusations a "lie." Piantedosi praised police efforts but emphasized the "presumption of innocence" at this stage.
