The Election Commission of India (ECI) has removed the names of 10.56 lakh voters in Assam after a special revision of electoral rolls. This move comes ahead of assembly polls due in less than six months. The integrated draft rolls, released on December 27, 2025, list 2,51,09,754 registered voters excluding 93,021 D-Voters or doubtful voters.
D-Voters are those disenfranchised due to unclear citizenship, identified under the Foreigners Act, 1946. Their details remain unchanged in the draft rolls.
The deletions include 4,78,992 names due to deaths, 5,23,680 voters who shifted addresses, and 53,619 identified for corrections.
House-to-house verification was done between November 22 and December 20, covering 61,03,103 households across Assam. The process involved 35 District Election Officers, 126 Electoral Registration Officers, 1,260 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, 29,656 Booth Level Officers, and 2,578 supervisors. Political parties deployed 61,533 Booth Level Agents to assist.
Voters can file claims or objections until January 22, 2026. Final rolls will be published on February 10.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said, "Under the Citizenship Act, there are separate provisions for citizenship in Assam. Under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India, the exercise of checking citizenship is about to be completed."
The special revision aims for error-free rolls by adding eligible voters, correcting errors, and removing duplicates or deceased voters. Assam now has 31,486 polling stations after rationalisation.
This special revision is part of a wider Special Intensive Revision taking place in 12 states and UTs preparing for upcoming elections, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
