On December 27, 2025, dozens of protesters gathered outside Lok Bhavan in Jammu. They burned an effigy of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha. The protest was against the MBBS admission list of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Reasi, J&K. Protesters demanded the list be revoked to reserve seats for Hindu students only. The protest was organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, a group of right-wing organizations. JK BJP women activists and trade leaders, including Jammu Chamber of Commerce president Arun Gupta, joined the demonstration. Protesters raised slogans like “LG go back.” The protest blocked the main road outside Lok Bhavan, causing traffic jams on nearby roads for over an hour and a half. Police were deployed in large numbers to maintain order and stop protesters from entering the complex. Samiti convener Colonel Sukhvir Singh Mankotia told reporters, "We will continue our protest till the resolution of our genuine demands which are related to our faith. We are not against students of any particular religion, we just want the seats in the medical college to be reserved for Hindu students alone." He added that since the Lt Governor chairs the shrine board, it is his duty to protect religious sentiments. Mankotia said the government should close the college if it cannot reserve seats for Hindu students. The issue began after the first MBBS batch admission was completed through the NEET merit list last month. The 50-seat batch includes 42 Muslim candidates, mostly from Kashmir, seven Hindu students from Jammu, and one Sikh candidate. Right-wing Hindu groups led protests that later formed the Sangharsh Samiti. Leaders have held talks with the Lt Governor and Union health minister. The protest on Saturday showed strong feelings about religious reservations in education in Jammu and Kashmir.
