Australia Faces Extreme Fire in West, Cyclone and Flood Watch in North
December 27, 2025
Australia is facing two extreme weather threats this week. In Western Australia, an out-of-control bushfire near Boddington, 130km south-east of Perth, has burned over 4,000 hectares and damaged the Newmont Boddington goldmine. Many residents evacuated and spent Christmas night in a shelter. The fire threat was downgraded Saturday morning but the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) warned, "It is not safe to return due to unstable fire and weather conditions." Eight fires are still burning in WA. Cooler weather may ease fire danger soon, but high temperatures above 30°C remain in many areas. Meanwhile, Queensland and the Northern Territory are under cyclone and flood watch. The Bureau of Meteorology expects heavy monsoonal rain, storms, and floods. Flood watch covers a vast area from the Mackay coast to Townsville and inland to Tennant Creek in the NT. North-west Queensland may receive 300 to 500 millimeters of rain, risking road closures and isolated communities. A flood warning is active between Townsville and Cairns with rainfall up to 150 millimeters early next week. Across much of the country, warmer weather continues with Adelaide, Melbourne, and Canberra seeing mid to high 30s, while Hobart stays cooler at low 20s.
