US Launches Powerful Strikes Against Islamic State in Nigeria, Trump Says
December 26, 2025
The US military carried out "powerful and deadly strikes" against the Islamic State (IS) group in north-western Nigeria, President Donald Trump said. He called IS "terrorist scum" and accused them of "targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians." The US Africa Command (Africom) confirmed the attack was coordinated with Nigeria in Sokoto state. Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar called it a "joint operation" targeting "terrorists" without regard to religion. Tuggar said more strikes are possible depending on decisions by both countries' leaders. Trump posted on Truth Social, "under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper." US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth thanked the Nigerian government for its support and cooperation. The US Department of Defense shared a video apparently showing a missile launch from a military ship. Nigeria's foreign ministry confirmed ongoing security cooperation with international partners, including the US, resulting in precision air strikes against terrorists in the northwest. Groups tracking violence say there is no proof that Christians are killed more than Muslims in Nigeria, which is nearly evenly split between the two religions. Adviser Daniel Bwala said Nigeria welcomes US help but stressed sovereignty and that jihadists target people of all faiths. President Bola Tinubu affirmed religious tolerance and said security issues affect all communities. Trump also designated Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern" citing an "existential threat" to Christians and claimed "thousands" were killed without evidence. Jihadist groups like Boko Haram and IS West Africa Province have caused violence for over a decade, killing mostly Muslims. Conflicts between mostly Muslim herders and mostly Christian farmers have led to tit-for-tat attacks, with casualties on all sides. Human rights groups see no evidence Christians are disproportionately targeted. Recently, the US also conducted a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria using jets, helicopters, and artillery.
