Man Lynched in Bangladesh Over Extortion Claims, Sparking Minority Safety Fears
December 25, 2025
Bangladesh has witnessed another lynching. Amrit Mondal, also called Samrat, was beaten by locals over extortion allegations. Police rushed to the spot after getting information and found Mondal in critical condition, The Daily Star reported. He was taken to the hospital but was declared dead. His body was sent to Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem. Authorities said Mondal faced at least two cases at Pangsha Police Station, including one for murder. Locals say he led a criminal gang involved in extortion and other crimes. After hiding in India for long, he recently returned and demanded money from Shahidul Islam, a villager. Last night, Mondal and his group tried to collect the money at Shahidul’s home. When the occupants shouted “robbers,” nearby villagers came and attacked Mondal. Mondal’s associates escaped, but Mohammad Selim was caught with a pistol and a one-shooter gun. Selim has been arrested. Just last week, Hindu worker Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and his body burned in Mymensingh after a blasphemy claim. The interim government, led by Mohammed Yunus, condemned the acts. Their statement on X said, "We wholeheartedly condemn lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no space for such violence in new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared." These attacks come during ongoing unrest and worries over violence against religious minorities and media groups.
