CM Stalin to Inaugurate 280 Free Houses for Sri Lankan Tamils in Tiruvannamalai
December 25, 2025
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate 280 new free houses for Sri Lankan Tamils on December 27. These homes are near Polur town in Tiruvannamalai district, where many Tamils have lived in poor conditions since the early 1990s.
The houses cost ₹22.62 crore and are part of a larger project executed by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). The residents lived in old, single-room houses with very few facilities. Now, each new house is 291 sq.ft with a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and attached washroom. They also will have free water and electricity.
H.S. Ravi, Tasildar for Sri Lankan Tamils, said, "The new housing quarters also have Over Head Tanks (OHTs), a community centre, and a public library. A workshop will provide free vocational training to beneficiaries."
Resident K. Sokki shared, "All these years, we have been living in a make-shift house with no basic amenities. The new free houses will end our ordeal, providing a decent living for our children."
The project is divided into three phases. Phase 1 built 111 houses in 2023. In phase 2, 252 houses were delivered in October 2025, with 280 more to be handed over on December 27 by the Chief Minister. The final 190 houses will come in phase 3. This means all 1,131 Sri Lankan Tamil families in the district will get homes.
Each house costs the state ₹8.10 lakh on average. The camp will also feature a community centre, a children’s centre, a fair price shop, and improved approach roads.
The housing initiative started in November 2021. Tiruvannamalai district has 11 camps with 3,196 residents. Nearby districts like Vellore, Tirupattur, and Ranipet also host camps. Since 1990, 2,239 families have lived in these areas.
During his visit, CM Stalin will also open 314 completed projects worth ₹2,095 crore. Highlights include a ₹30.15 crore new bus terminus, a ₹12.17 crore public grievances building, a ₹32.16 crore vegetable market complex, and a ₹2.83 crore police station near Arunachaleshwara temple.
He will lay the foundation stone for 46 new projects including ₹161.90 crore for widening three major roads into four lanes: Tiruvannamalai-Harur Main Road, Arcot-Tindivanam Road, and Kancheepuram-Thiruvathipuram Road.
