A 24-year-old woman, R. Priyanka from Aruppukottai, was stabbed to death by her father, P. Ramesh, 51, and brother, R. Balamurugan. The incident happened because the family opposed her relationship. Priyanka had refused to marry the man her family chose. On December 20, Priyanka was stabbed in Avaniyapuram and was taken to Government Rajaji Hospital with multiple stab wounds to her throat and shoulders. She died on December 22 due to her injuries. Priyanka worked as a nurse in Tirunelveli. Her family lived in Koppu Sinthampatti near Aruppukottai. They had arranged her engagement to a man from Villapuram, Madurai, but Priyanka told them she was in a relationship with someone from her own caste. After she left home, her family filed a complaint at the All Women Police Station in Aruppukottai. Priyanka told police she did not want to return home, so she stayed at a shelter home. On December 20, Ramesh and Balamurugan took Priyanka from the shelter home to Ramesh's elder daughter Aishwarya's house in Avaniyapuram. Police said the father and son locked Priyanka in a room. Balamurugan stabbed her many times, reportedly on Ramesh's orders. Initially, police charged them with attempt to murder. After Priyanka died, the charge was changed to murder. The police have arrested Ramesh and are searching for Balamurugan. The investigation is ongoing.
