Turkey Arrests 115 IS Suspects Planning New Year's Attacks in Major Raids
December 25, 2025
Turkish authorities arrested 115 suspected Islamic State (IS) members who were planning attacks on Christmas and New Year's events. Mass raids took place across 124 locations in Istanbul. Police seized firearms, ammunition, and organisational documents. Officials said the suspects targeted non-Muslim groups and were in contact with IS operatives abroad. Authorities are still looking for 22 more suspects. The Istanbul chief prosecutor stated, "IS supporters had been actively planning attacks across Turkey this week, particularly against non-Muslims." The arrests come shortly after Turkish intelligence detained a senior IS-linked Turkish national near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. This person was accused of plotting attacks on civilians. Turkey often targets suspected IS members given the country's long border with Syria, where IS still operates. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, close to the Turkish government, promised to work with the US and Europe to eliminate remaining IS forces. Recently, the US launched air strikes in Syria against IS following the killing of three Americans, including two soldiers and a civilian, during a recent ambush by IS gunmen.
