The Himachal Pradesh government terminated Dr. Raghav Narula, a senior resident doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Shimla, following a physical fight with a patient. The incident happened on Monday, December 22, 2025, in the pulmonary ward. A committee found that both Dr. Narula and patient Arjun Singh were responsible for misconduct and misbehavior. The government order said, "Both the patient and the senior resident doctor were responsible for the incident, which amounted to misconduct, misbehaviour, acts unbecoming of a public servant, and violation of the Resident Doctor Policy-2025." Dr. Narula’s services were ended immediately under the rules of the Resident Doctor Policy-2025. Meanwhile, an FIR has been filed against the doctor by the patient's family. A video showing Dr. Narula punching patient Arjun Singh and Singh trying to kick the doctor went viral. The hospital suspended Dr. Narula on Monday evening after the viral video and a preliminary probe. Arjun Singh, a teacher in Shimla district, said the fight started because he objected to the doctor addressing him disrespectfully. Dr. Narula claimed the patient used abusive language first and said the viral video does not show the full truth. The fight caused protests at the hospital, demanding the doctor be arrested. Police had to step in to calm the situation. On Wednesday, the Shimla Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers (SAMDCOT) demanded a fair investigation. They warned of a statewide movement if the crowd’s instigators are not punished. SAMDCOT said, "Harassment, threats, misinformation and unsafe working conditions are forcing doctors to take collective action to protect their safety and dignity, which ultimately impacts patient care." They stressed hospitals must be safe for both patients and doctors.
