West Bengal Sees Third Day of Protests Over Bangladeshi Hindu Man's Lynching
December 24, 2025
Protests over the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh continued for a third day on December 24, 2025, across West Bengal. Pro-Hindu organisations held demonstrations at several land ports along the Bangladesh border, including Phulbari in Siliguri, Petrapole in North 24 Parganas, Mahadipur in Malda, and Changrabandha in Cooch Behar. Supporters carried saffron flags but were stopped by Border Security Force personnel before reaching the zero line.
BJP MLA Ashok Kirtania led a march from Jayantipur Bazar to the Petrapole border, the largest land port between India and Bangladesh. He warned, "We are holding this procession to bring it to the notice of Mohammad Yunus [chief adviser to Government of Bangladesh] that trade will be suspended if the situation in Bangladesh continues like this."
The protests were organised by Hindutva groups like Sanatani Eikya Mancha with strong involvement from BJP leaders. Earlier, West Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari called for protests at land ports and threatened to stop exports if tensions persist.
Despite the protests, trade at Petrapole, which handles about 60% of land-based garment imports from Bangladesh and saw transactions worth over ₹30,420 crore in 2023-24, continued without impact, confirmed traders.
Protests also spread to Kolkata where BJP supporters attempted to block the Howrah Bridge but were stopped by police. Clashes ensued when protesters tried to break through barricades. Several marches have been ongoing since December 22, with demonstrators targeting the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.
Violence broke out near the Commission on December 23 when protesters tried to breach barricades; police responded with force, arresting 19 people, including seven women. The arrested were presented in court on December 24.
The BJP in Delhi condemned police action as the "height of appeasement." BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari highlighted that protests against the lynching occurred nationwide but police used lathi charge only in West Bengal. West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya accused the Trinamool Congress government of being "anti-Hindu."
