A group representing thousands of MSMEs in Telangana, led by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI), voiced strong concerns on December 24 over a sharp rise in electricity bills and unclear industrial relocation plans. The increase followed the removal of time-of-day (ToD) concessions, pushing bills up by 70% to four times the previous amount. FTCCI President R. Ravikumar said that the power bill hike is a shock that will cut into business profits. The new Hyderabad Industrial Lands Transformation Policy (HILTP), which plans to shift industrial units beyond the Outer Ring Road (ORR), also threatens the existence of some businesses. Other groups including Telangana Industrialists’ Federation and Telangana State Solar Open Access Developers’ Association joined the protest. TSOADA General Secretary Venkat N.N.K highlighted that Reddy DISCOMs suddenly began billing for lead kVArh without enough transition time, creating hardship for industrial and commercial consumers. Industry leaders demanded that the government either restore the night ToD concession of ₹1.50 per unit or increase concessions during the day, citing that solar energy purchases by DISCOMs should lower costs. They called for halting HILTP until clear plans for relocation support, compensation, and timelines are established. FTCCI Vice President Srinivas Garimella stressed the need for lengthy planning, approvals, and infrastructure readiness for any unit moves. The industry representatives warned that sudden, unclear policies and a lack of government consultation hurt investments and job creation. They also noted issues with the Clean and Green Energy Policy, where no NOCs have been given to solar developers yet, and obstacles remain in open access power buying, including high surcharges. They urged the Telangana government to rethink these decisions and adopt a consultative approach to protect the MSME sector’s future.
