Protests Rage Over Honour Killing of Pregnant Woman in Karnataka’s Dharwad District
December 24, 2025
Protests broke out for the second day in Karnataka against the honour killing in Inam Veerapur village, Hubballi taluk of Dharwad district. A pregnant woman was murdered by her father for marrying outside their caste. People gathered in Dharwad, Haveri, and Kalaburagi to condemn the brutal crime. In Dharwad, the Mahila Dourjanya Virodhi Okkuta led the protest with multiple organisations taking part. Speakers called the murder shocking and said it shows women still can’t freely choose their marriage partners. They demanded strict punishment for the murderer and those who helped him. They also called for school and college programs to promote secularism and gender equality. In Haveri, groups like DYFI, SFI, and Dalit rights committees protested outside the Tahsildar’s office. DYFI state secretary Basavaraj Pujari said the killing exposed deep caste hatred. He urged the state to punish the guilty strictly and provide legal protection for inter-caste couples, including social and economic support. He also asked for awareness drives and better law enforcement against violence on women. In Kalaburagi, members of the Maryade Hatya Virodhi Horata Samiti held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They stressed the rise of honour-related crimes caused by intolerance to young people’s choices, especially women. They called these crimes a threat to social harmony and demanded a strong law specifically to stop honour killings. The protests reflect widespread anger at caste-based violence and calls for justice and protection for victims nationwide.
