The Assam government on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, ordered an immediate suspension of internet and mobile data services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. This move comes after reports of a serious law and order situation in the two districts. Despite the ban, voice calls and fixed telephone broadband will continue to operate. Biswajit Pegu, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home and Political Department, issued the notification. He stated, "The Government of Assam received reports from the District Magistrates of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong on December 23 of a serious law and order situation in two districts." The government fears that social media and internet platforms might be used to spread "inflammatory messages, rumours etc," potentially worsening the unrest. To prevent this, the government invoked Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 along with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services Rules, 2017. Pegu added, "I, Sri Biswajit Pegu IAS, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home & Political Department, hereby promulgate this notification to prohibit the Internet/Mobile Data Service of all Mobile Service Providers in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong with immediate effect and until further orders." Any breach of this order will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. The ban aims to maintain public peace and stop further deterioration of the situation in the districts.
