On Tuesday, Vaiko, general secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), joined other leaders to demand an inquiry into the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka’s final war phase. They also called for a United Nations-guided referendum to create a separate Tamil Eelam. In a joint statement, Vaiko, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader M.H. Jawahirullah, and Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan urged the eviction of the Sri Lankan Army and Sinhalese settlers from Tamil areas. They said, "Tamils in Tamil Nadu and the Tamil diaspora should take initiative in this regard." The leaders accused the Sri Lankan government of blocking demands for an inquiry and watering down calls for a separate Tamil state. They also slammed the Tamil Desiya Makkal Munnani, saying its demand for autonomy to India was "a farcical drama" betraying Tamils. The group noted that although Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court canceled the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord’s recommendation to merge Northern and Eastern Provinces, India failed to respond. They criticized both the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress party for not condemning the Tamil killings. Furthermore, they mentioned a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council, where India and Cuba, backed by 29 countries, praised the Sri Lankan government and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The leaders called for a stronger stand against the annihilation of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
