December 23, 2025
A video showing the last moments before a deadly car crash involving Vince Zampella, co-creator of Call of Duty, is going viral online. The footage shows Zampella driving a Ferrari at high speed on Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California. The car exits a tunnel, loses control on a curve, hits a concrete barrier, and catches fire. Viewers have called the video disturbing and triggering.
Social media users reacted strongly. One said, “Never go 140 miles an hour in a Ferrari on a curve. It was like a video game crash.” Another commented, “Driver error 100% — looks like he underestimated his speed, froze and stopped turning with the corner.” A third user wrote, “I can’t believe someone posted this. This is freaking terrible.”
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that Vince Zampella, age 55, died in this single-vehicle accident on Sunday just before 12:45 pm. The Ferrari went off the winding two-lane road after a tunnel in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. Zampella died at the scene. His passenger was taken to hospital but later also died. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Zampella was a giant in the video game world. He co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 and helped create the Call of Duty series, including Modern Warfare (2007) and Modern Warfare 2 (2009). These games transformed first-person shooters and online multiplayer gaming. In 2010, he co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which Electronic Arts later bought. Respawn made hit games like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Zampella also worked on the Battlefield series at EA.
Electronic Arts called his impact "profound and far-reaching," calling him a visionary who shaped interactive entertainment and inspired millions worldwide.
