Two People's Liberation Army Cadres Arrested for Extortion in Manipur Amid Rising Ethnic Violence

Security forces arrested two cadres of the banned People's Liberation Army for extortion in Manipur's Imphal West district, police said on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. One was caught at his home in Kwakeithel on Monday, December 22. The other was held from Takyel Kolom Leikai Leirak-6, according to a senior police officer. Both are accused of extortion activities.
In a separate operation, two improvised mortars and three WT communication sets were recovered from Konaitong and Pelyang hill range in Tengnoupal district on Monday.
Search operations have been active in Manipur since ethnic violence erupted two years ago. The conflict between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups has killed over 260 people and left thousands homeless since May 2023.
The Centre imposed President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The State assembly's tenure continues until 2027 but is under suspended animation.
