UK Exporters Urge Keir Starmer’s Government for Closer EU Trade Deal Now
December 23, 2025
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned Keir Starmer’s government that a closer trade deal with the EU is a “strategic necessity”. Over 54% of UK exporters, mostly small and medium firms, said the post-Brexit trade agreement isn’t helping them sell more in the EU. This is a 13% rise in dissatisfaction from last year.
The BCC represents over 50,000 firms employing 6 million people. It said just 4 out of 946 businesses found government support on trade policy changes to be comprehensive. Steve Lynch, BCC’s director of international trade, said, “Trade is the fastest route to growth, yet firms tell us it is becoming harder, not easier, to sell into our largest market.”
Labour politicians like Wes Streeting have called for a deeper trading relationship with the EU. This suggestion may mean joining a customs union, which conflicts with Labour’s official manifesto promise of “no return” to the EU single market or customs union.
The BCC’s report lists five priorities for talks with Brussels in 2026. These include reducing border checks on animal and plant products, linking UK and EU emissions trading, creating a youth mobility scheme, joining the EU’s defence fund SAFE, and simplifying VAT and customs rules.
Businesses shared their struggles: a small manufacturer in Greater Manchester said, “Since Brexit our export sales have virtually stopped. The TCA has had no impact in recovering any sales into the EU.” A retailer in Hampshire linked falling jobs and closed companies to high taxes and leaving the EU.
A government spokesperson responded, “This government is removing red tape and trade barriers to support jobs, business, and growth. That’s exactly why we reset our relationship with the EU and are making strong progress in negotiations.”
