The Madurai City Police on Monday allowed devotees to climb the Thirupparankundram hillock to pray at the Kasiviswanthar temple and the nearby Sikkander Dargah. Earlier, the pathway was blocked following tensions over lighting the Karthigai Deepam at a deepathoon. This order came after Justice G.R. Swaminathan of Madurai Bench, Madras High Court directed the lighting on December 3. BJP and Hindu Munnani members protested, prompting the police to impose a prohibitory order the next day. The dargah stands close to the deepathoon, which the state government called a "survey stone pillar." The High Court later quashed the prohibitory order, but police maintained the ban on climbing the hill. On Sunday, only a few dargah committee members were allowed to hoist a flag mast marking the start of the Santhanakoodu festival on January 6. The police stopped BJP and Hindu Munnani cadres who wanted to light the deepam. Monday saw police permitting devotees to visit both the temple and dargah after noting their details. Officers are posted on the hilltop to stop anyone from going near the deepathoon.
