Spain's Christmas Lottery Rewards La Bañeza Town with 468 Million Euros Jackpot
December 23, 2025
Spain's Christmas lottery, known as El Gordo, has brought a huge jackpot of 468 million euros to the town of La Bañeza in the León province. Most winning tickets with the number 79432 were sold in small towns nearby. Each ticket cost 20 euros and the prize per ticket is 400,000 euros. Many neighbours and workmates buy tickets together, sharing the big win.
La Bañeza has around 11,000 people. This massive jackpot comes just four months after wildfires destroyed 8,000 hectares near the town and killed a local man, Abel Ramos. The north-west of Spain faces wildfires often but this year was especially harsh. Firefighters battled huge fires in León and Galicia all summer, burning nearly 0.8% of Spain’s land.
Javier Carrera, La Bañeza’s mayor, said the lottery win "means for La Bañeza an injection of excitement and hope." He also noted the recent closure of a sugar-beet factory causing many job losses.
Another town in León, Villablino, won 200 million euros. Mayor Mario Rivas said, "We needed some good news." This town suffered from fires and lost five locals in mining accidents this year. Many winning tickets were sold by a local Alzheimer's association. La Pola de Gordón shared 60 million euros, and a working-class area in Madrid got 64 million euros.
Maribel Martín from Villablino held a winning ticket worth 400,000 euros. She was shopping when her son called with the news. "We were really down and 200 million euros is a wonderful thing," she said. She plans to "spread it around a bit and enjoy life."
