NSW Passes Anti-Protest and Gun Reforms; Greens Lead Legal Fight
December 23, 2025
NSW parliament passed new laws last night to restrict protests and tighten gun ownership after the Bondi shooting tragedy. The bill passed the lower house with Liberal support, but Nationals opposed it. The law limits gun ownership to 4 for individuals and 10 for farmers and shooters. Protest laws include banning slogans like 'globalise the intifada', leading to widespread protests. Protesters rallied in Sydney, chanting for Palestine. Greens justice spokesperson Sue Higginson and pro-Palestine groups will challenge the laws in court, saying they violate free political speech. Police arrested a 53-year-old woman accused of shouting antisemitic slurs at a university event in Sydney. The upper house debate could be long, with many amendments expected, possibly extending into Christmas Day. The government hopes to pass the bill by Tuesday night.
