Ghana Official Rejects 'Detty December' Label, Pushes 'December in Ghana' Brand
December 23, 2025
Ghana’s official in charge of diaspora affairs, Kofi Okyere-Darko, has rejected the popular term "Detty December" for the country's vibrant year-end party season. "On a personal level I don't want the word 'detty' to be associated with anything Ghana... that's something I'm not very comfortable with," he told the BBC at the Ghana Diaspora Summit in Accra. "Detty," West African Pidgin for "dirty," is used to describe wild, unrestricted fun during the festive season. Despite its popularity among young people, the government prefers the term "December in Ghana" for its official tourism push. Last December, over 125,000 international visitors came to Ghana, many from the diaspora, boosting the economy significantly. Mr Okyere-Darko noted that tourism has been strong for years, well before "Detty December" became popular about eight years ago with Nigerian musician Mr Eazi's Detty Rave festival in Accra. He even suggested rebranding "December in Ghana" to "D.I.G." as a catchy alternative for younger audiences: "Let's dig it!" December in Ghana features many music events with stars like US rapper Busta Rhymes, UK rapper Giggs, and local icons Samini and Reggie Rockstone performing. Besides parties, the season now also includes investment seminars and networking sessions in sectors like property and textiles, broadening its attraction. While the influx of tourists brings lively energy and business, some locals complain about overcrowding and high prices. Ghana continues to promote itself as a key destination for Africans and the diaspora visiting the continent.
