Environmentalists Demand Clarity on Aravalli Definition After Minister's Contradictory Claims
December 22, 2025
On December 22, 2025, the Aravalli Virasat Jan Abhiyaan, a group of environmentalists and citizens, raised concerns over conflicting statements made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. The Minister had defended changing the definition of the Aravalli Range on December 21, 2025, claiming this would protect over 90% of the region. However, the group pointed out inconsistencies between his statements and those of the BJP about the range's total area.
The coalition demanded the Minister clarify: the number of hills considered part of the Aravalli Range according to the Forest Survey of India’s current definition; how many hills fall under the new definition; and the total area covered in both cases.
They further called on the Environment Ministry to urgently consult rural and urban residents in every administrative block across the Aravalli districts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana. This, they said, is essential amid growing protests against the redefinition.
Bhupender Yadav had earlier claimed that the redefinition would help bring more than 90% of the Aravalli region under protection. Yet, the environmentalists argue the details are unclear and require transparency.
