In 2025, India faced numerous deadly stampedes causing more than 100 deaths. Poor crowd management and inadequate public infrastructure were key factors. About 80% of these tragedies happened at religious gatherings or pilgrimages.
Major incidents include:
- January 8, Tirupati: Six people died and over 20 were critically injured when crowds pushed for Vaikunta Ekadasi festival tickets at Tirumala temple.
- January 29, Maha Kumbh: Over thirty died and 60 injured after barricades collapsed under millions of pilgrims waiting for a holy dip at Sangam.
- February 15, New Delhi railway station: At least 18 killed and more injured as crowds surged for trains to the Maha Kumbh.
- May 3, Goa: Seven died and 80 were hurt at the Lairai Jatra festival that attracted lakhs of devotees.
- June 4, Bengaluru: Eleven died and over 50 injured in a stampede after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL victory celebration attracted over 2.5 lakh fans to a 32,000-seat stadium.
- September 27, Karur: Forty-one died and 100 were hurt during a rally for actor-politician Vijay, when a crowd surge occurred due to his delayed arrival.
- November 1, Srikakulam: Nine died and 15 injured as over 20,000 people crowded a temple for Ekadashi, despite it usually drawing 2,000.
These incidents highlight the urgent need to improve crowd control and safety measures at large public events across India.
