Air India's Boeing 777 Returns to Delhi After Engine Trouble During Flight
December 22, 2025
On Monday morning, December 22, 2025, Air India's Boeing 777 flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai returned to Delhi shortly after takeoff. The plane, carrying around 335 passengers and crew, experienced a technical issue in its right engine. Flight tracking data shows the aircraft was airborne for nearly one hour before making an emergency landing at Delhi Airport. According to Air India, “The crew operating flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai on 22 December decided to return to Delhi shortly after take-off due to a technical issue as per standard operating procedure.” The airline confirmed the aircraft landed safely and that all passengers and crew disembarked without harm. A source from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said, “During flap retraction after take-off, the flight crew observed low engine oil pressure on the right hand engine.” The engine oil pressure dropped to zero. The source added that past records did not show any unusual oil consumption. The affected Boeing 777-300 ER is currently undergoing necessary inspections. Meanwhile, Air India has arranged alternative flights to transport the passengers to Mumbai. The airline apologized for the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen event.
