Panic broke out in parts of Ayyankunnu grama panchayat in Kannur, Kerala, when a wild elephant wandered into homes. The Forest department restarted efforts on Monday morning to drive the elephant back into the forest. Authorities issued prohibitory orders in four wards, banning public movement and gatherings to keep people safe. The elephant was first seen around 5 a.m. on Sunday near Angadikadavu school. Later, it stayed in a rubber plantation. Officials say the elephant came from the Parakkamalai forest area but stayed near homes until late Sunday night, frightening residents. Forest officials, rapid response team members, and police monitored the elephant. Residents were told to stay indoors, and warnings were broadcast through loudspeakers throughout Ayyankunnu. Police and forest staff stood guard near possible elephant paths. The elephant turned aggressive during efforts to move it starting at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. It tried to cross a road near Inthumkari's foothills, a crowded area near the forest. It damaged two house sheds and a machine shed. The chase ended at 6:30 p.m. due to poor light, tough hilly terrain, and safety fears. Officials said the situation worsened as groups of people gathered and made noise, forcing the elephant to back away twice while crossing the road. To help safely return the elephant to the forest, District Collector Arun K. Vijayan banned public gatherings from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday in Wards 6, 7, 9, and 11 of Ayyankunnu. Forest officials asked the public to follow restrictions and cooperate to avoid risks.
