Air India Express has announced it will set up an external committee next week to investigate an incident involving one of its off-duty captains assaulting a passenger at Delhi airport's Terminal 1 on December 19, 2025. The pilot, Virender Sejwal, was suspended immediately after the altercation. Sources confirmed a show-cause notice has been issued seeking his explanation. The inquiry will proceed under labor laws, as pilots are classified as workmen. The passenger, Ankit Dewan, posted a photo on social media showing blood on his face from the incident, along with a photo of the pilot. The Civil Aviation Ministry responded swiftly, taking "serious cognisance" of the event. The Ministry ordered the airline to ground the pilot immediately and issued a formal inquiry. It also requested detailed reports from BCAS and CISF. Air India Express, owned by the Tata Group, issued a statement condemning the pilot's behavior. The airline said, "The employee concerned has been removed from official duties with immediate effect, pending investigation. Appropriate disciplinary action will be initiated based on the findings of the inquiry." Officials contacted the passenger after the incident. The inquiry aims to ensure accountability and uphold safety and security at the airport. The incident shines a spotlight on passenger conduct and staff discipline within Indian aviation.
