A massive power outage struck large parts of San Francisco on Saturday, cutting electricity for nearly one-third of the city. Around 130,000 of the city’s 414,000 electricity customers lost power at the peak. By 9:30 pm, the number dropped to about 40,000. The blackout affected the northern areas including Richmond, Sunset, Golden Gate Park, Haight-Ashbury, and parts of downtown. Landmarks like City Hall’s dome went dark. People used phone flashlights while crossing streets, and some restaurants served meals by candlelight. The outage forced many shops to close and mass transit stations to shut down. Waymo stopped its driverless taxis temporarily. The San Francisco Ballet cancelled a Nutcracker show. BART closed Powell Street and Civic Center stations. Muni light-rail reduced service due to computer problems. Firefighters fought a fire at a PG&E substation on Eighth and Mission streets, reported around 2 pm. Officials said the fire was a "contributing factor" to the blackout. Mayor Daniel Lurie confirmed the substation fire caused the outage. PG&E said the power grid was stabilised and full electricity was expected overnight. City officials asked people to stay home and treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops. The outage hit just before Christmas, affecting shoppers and businesses. Gas station attendant Kevin Lee said, "No power, no business."
