Maharashtra Local Body Polls Hit by Bogus Voting and Cash-for-Votes Allegations
December 20, 2025
Maharashtra's local body elections on December 20, 2025, turned chaotic with multiple charges of bogus voting, cash distribution, and voter list problems. In Ambernath, police detained 208 women brought from Bhiwandi to cast fake votes. A senior election officer said, "Last night around 12, we learnt about an allegation that in Krishna Marriage Hall in Ambernath, 208 women were brought from Bhiwandi for the purpose of bogus voting." Police began questioning the women on election day morning and set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe. In Panvel, outrage erupted after one man was listed as the father of 268 voters, many linked to non-local youths from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, raising duplicate entries concerns. In Dharmabad, Nanded district, voters were reportedly confined in a marriage hall during cash distribution. Police rescued them and broke up the crowd. At the same time, a man was caught impersonating his brother with a fake Aadhaar card in Sinnar, Nashik. Officials seized cash ranging from ₹500 to ₹10,000 in Akola, Buldhana, Beed, and Pune amid vote-buying claims. Polling for 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayats ended by 5:30 p.m. with a 47.04% voter turnout reported by the State Election Commission. Counting starts at 10 a.m. on December 21. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala accused the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance of "massive misuse of money and power" and called Maharashtra "a leading State in corruption." He promised the Congress would fight corruption and misgovernance in upcoming BMC elections and contest alone. Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal said, "there is no rule of law left in Maharashtra" and described the contest as ideological. The SIT in Ambernath will submit its report soon, with ongoing police investigations in other districts. The State Election Commission has not yet commented on these events.
