CPI(M) Condemns Attacks on Media and Minorities in Bangladesh, Calls for Immediate Government Action
December 20, 2025
The Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expressed deep concern on Saturday, December 20, 2025, over attacks on media outlets and minorities by fundamentalists in Bangladesh. In a statement, CPI(M) called these attacks "dastardly" and condemned the targeting of key cultural institutions, Chhayanot and Udichi.
The party said, "It appears that religious fundamentalist forces are attempting to expand their influence in Bangladesh by polarising society along communal lines and attacking minorities and media outlets not favourable towards them." CPI(M) warned that such forces could weaken Bangladesh and impact the entire region negatively.
The party added, "Communal forces on both sides of the border may seek to exploit the situation to further incite hatred by feeding off each other. Maintaining social harmony and democracy is the need of the hour."
CPI(M) expressed confidence that the people of Bangladesh will stay united in these challenging times and uphold the values of the 1971 liberation struggle. It urged the interim government to take strong steps to control communal violence and ensure justice for those responsible.
The party also stressed the importance of holding free and fair elections, stating, "The interim government should take all necessary steps to ensure that communal forces are reined in and that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice. It should also ensure that elections are held in a free and fair manner, allowing the people to express their will without fear."
On the same day, Bangladesh held the funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader whose death sparked unrest. The event was attended by Interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, his advisory council members, and Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman. The funeral drew large crowds amid tight security in the capital.
