The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) made noticeable gains in the Kerala local body elections in Alappuzha district. The NDA increased its ward tally from 181 in 2020 to 240. The BJP won 235 of these seats, including those of independents backed by the party, while its ally Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) secured five seats. The NDA became the single largest bloc in four grama panchayats: Budhanoor (7 seats), Karthikappally (6), Neelamperoor (7), and Thiruvanvandoor (5). It also tied for the lead in Chennithala-Thripperuthura and Ala panchayats with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF). Compared to 2020, the NDA’s total wards at the grama panchayat level rose to 197 from 146. The BJP doubled its ward tally in Punnapra South from two to four, while the LDF’s strength dropped significantly. The UDF secured a clear majority there. Many seats won by the BJP came from the CPI(M). A senior BJP leader said this was due to “growing disenchantment” with the CPI(M). He added, “While CPI(M) leaders are amassing wealth through corruption, grassroots workers remain marginalised. This has led to a search for alternatives, which benefited the BJP.” The CPI(M) dismissed these claims. A party leader said their support remained strong and blamed BJP victories on personal and family connections. In municipalities, the NDA won 35 wards across six urban bodies, up from 31 in 2020. It secured seats in Mavelikara, Chengannur, Haripad, Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, and Cherthala. The NDA doubled its seats at the block panchayat level from four to eight. Despite these gains, the NDA did not win any seats in the Alappuzha district panchayat but finished second in three divisions. Earlier, although it was the largest bloc in four grama panchayats in 2020, the NDA could not control most due to alliances among rival fronts and internal issues.
