PM Modi Visits West Bengal Amid Election Roll Tensions, Inaugurates Highway Projects
December 20, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Nadia district in West Bengal on December 20, 2025. He will inaugurate two national highway projects and hold a public rally amid rising political tensions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This is Modi's first visit since draft SIR rolls were published and his third in five months. He will speak to the Matua community, which is anxious after many names were dropped from the draft electoral list. The BJP is expected to use the rally to prepare for state assembly elections early next year.
On social media, Modi said, "The people of West Bengal are benefiting from numerous pro-people initiatives of the Central government. At the same time, they are suffering due to the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) misgovernance in every sector."
The SIR exercise has caused concern, especially among refugee Hindus and Matuas, as 5.82 million names have been removed from the voter list, and many entries flagged for discrepancies. The BJP claims the fears are exaggerated. BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar said, "We are hopeful that the PM's message would dispel those fears and canards." He also mentioned that the Centre may extend deadlines under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to help persecuted people gain citizenship.
However, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called the visit a "damage control exercise" and criticized unfulfilled citizenship promises since 2019. Manata Banerjee has led protests against the SIR in Nadia and nearby districts.
Modi will inaugurate the 66.7 km four-laning of the Barajaguli-Krishnanagar section of NH-34 in Nadia and lay the foundation for the 17.6 km four-laning of the Barasat–Barajaguli section in North 24 Parganas. These projects worth ₹3,200 crore aim to link Kolkata and Siliguri, boosting trade and tourism.
