Bengaluru Imposes Strict Ban on Equine Movement Near Turf Club to Stop Glanders Outbreak
December 19, 2025
Bengaluru Urban District has imposed tough restrictions around the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) after confirmed glanders cases. The deputy commissioner, G. Jagadeesha, banned the movement of horses, donkeys, and mules within a two-km radius of the BTC. "Immediate containment steps were necessary given the contagious nature of Glanders," said Mr. Jagadeesha, who is also chairperson of the District Livestock Disease Management Committee. Two horses at BTC tested positive for glanders, a highly infectious equine disease. The Bangalore Turf Club has been declared the epicentre of the infection under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases Act. The order forbids all equine movement in the zone for any reason, including recreation, religious ceremonies, and public processions, until further notice. To stop the outbreak, BTC canceled all remaining races of the Bangalore Winter Meeting 2025-26. The administration aims to protect animal health and public safety with these urgent steps.
