Knife Attack in Taipei Metro Kills 3, Injures 5 Amid Smoke Bomb Chaos
December 19, 2025
At least three people were killed and five injured in Taipei, Taiwan, during a shocking metro attack on Friday evening. A 27-year-old suspect set off smoke bombs at the main metro station before moving to another busy spot, stabbing victims along the way. Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai said the attacker also used Molotov cocktails. The suspect later died after falling from a building. The motive remains unknown. Videos show crowds fleeing in panic during rush hour. One man trying to stop the attacker was hit with a blunt object and died later in hospital. Premier Cho ordered increased security at metro, railway stations, and airports. He said, "We will investigate [the suspect's] background and associated relationships to understand his motives and determine if there are other connected factors." Taiwan President William Lai promised a quick investigation. Knife attacks are rare in Taiwan. The last similar attack was in 2014, when four people were killed on an underground train. The 2014 attacker was executed in 2016.
