Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed serious concerns over the new VB-G RAM G Bill. This law passed by Parliament will replace the existing MGNREGA, a key rural employment scheme. Pinarayi Vijayan wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the Centre to avoid implementing this law. He said the new Bill cuts the Central share of wages from 100% to 60%, causing heavy financial losses for states. Kerala alone is estimated to lose about Rs 3,500 crore every year. The CM highlighted that MGNREGA was launched during a tough rural crisis to provide guaranteed jobs on demand, which remains crucial amid rising unemployment and inequality. Kerala has been a leader in running the scheme well. He warned that the new Bill’s changes, especially its move away from decentralization, will harm the scheme’s goals and the states’ interests. Pinarayi Vijayan also stressed that Mahatma Gandhi’s name should continue to be linked to this important employment program, as Gandhi worked tirelessly for the welfare of the poor. He criticized the new law for promoting bureaucratic control against Gandhian ideals and the spirit of constitutional decentralization through the 73rd and 74th amendments. The Chief Minister's letter was made public on December 19, 2025.
