The Election Commission of India released the draft electoral roll for Tamil Nadu on December 19, 2025, following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The revision is crucial as the State prepares for Assembly elections scheduled next year. The second phase of this exercise was announced on October 27 and covered Tamil Nadu among 12 other states and union territories, impacting nearly 51 crore voters nationwide. The voter listing period in Tamil Nadu was initially planned from November 4 to December 4 but was extended twice, finally ending on December 14. Archana Patnaik, the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, informed reporters in Chennai that over 97.37 lakh voters were removed from the list due to reasons like death, shifting residence, absenteeism, duplications, and failure to submit forms. The updated draft roll now has 5,43,76,756 voters, including 2,66,63,233 men, 2,77,06,332 women, and 7,191 persons of the third gender. This number is 97,37,831 less than the voter count on October 27, which was 6,41,14,587. Voters can check their names in this draft electoral roll online via the CEO Tamil Nadu website, district election officer portals, the ECINET mobile app, or offline with Booth Level Officers (BLOs). If a name is missing, voters must fill Form 6, submit proof of age and residence, and a recent photo, either online or to their BLO. Special camps will be organized soon for such corrections. Detailed lists of deleted voters and reasons are accessible on district and CEO websites and displayed at local government offices. This updated voter list sets the stage clearly for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026.
