Yamuna Expressway Pile-Up Kills 19, DNA Tests Underway to ID Victims
December 18, 2025
The death toll from the huge pile-up on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura rose to 19 on Thursday, December 18, 2025. District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh told PTI Videos that four of the dead have been identified. "Nineteen people have lost their lives in the accident. Identification of four victims has been completed and DNA samples of the remaining bodies have been taken," he said. About 90 people were hurt; most have returned home after treatment. Only six remain hospitalized. The accident happened on Tuesday when eight buses and two smaller vehicles crashed, sparking a large fire. Many bodies were badly burned, making visual ID hard. DNA samples from 12 unidentified victims were taken and sent to Forensic Science Laboratory for matching. Families of some victims have yet to come forward. To stop such accidents, the state government gave new orders: vehicles should travel in convoys, traffic stops when visibility is poor, and CCTV cameras are to be installed on the expressway. A formal investigation is underway under Additional District Magistrate Amresh Maurya’s supervision.
