India Reopens Dhaka Visa Centre, Closes Two Others in Bangladesh Over Security Concerns
December 18, 2025
India resumed operations at its visa application centre in Dhaka on Thursday, December 18, 2025. This came one day after it closed the centre due to rising security concerns. However, India shut two other visa centres in Khulna and Rajshahi, citing the same security issues. These locations are among five Indian Visa Application Centres (IVAC) in Bangladesh, including centres in Chattogram and Sylhet.
The Dhaka centre, located at Jamuna Future Park, is the main hub for Indian visa services in the capital. An IVAC official told PTI, "Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka is now operational and functioning normally."
The Dhaka IVAC was temporarily closed on Wednesday, December 17, after large anti-India protestors approached the Indian High Commission. The IVAC website announced the closure of the Khulna and Rajshahi centres on Thursday. It stated, "In view of the on-going security situation, we wish to bring to your kind notice that IVAC Rajshahi and Khulna will be closed today (18.12.2025). All applicants who have appointment slots booked for submission today will be given a slot at a later date."
On Wednesday, India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh's envoy, Riaz Hamidullah. India expressed strong concern about extremist plans that threatened the security of the Indian mission in Dhaka. The MEA said, "We expect the interim government to ensure the safety of Missions and Posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations." The envoy was informed of India's worries about the worsening security situation in Bangladesh.
