A Kuki tribal group called the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) has warned transgender social activist Malem Thongam not to enter Manipur's Kangpokpi district on December 19, 2025. Malem Thongam, from the Meitei community, is on a 'Cycling for Manipur Peace' journey. She started cycling from Qutub Minar, Delhi, on October 2, 2025. By December 17, she reached Senapati district after covering more than 2,300 km, and plans to continue through the Kuki-majority Kangpokpi before ending in Imphal. COTU stated, "It should be stopped immediately" and added, "If any untoward incidents happen when she crosses Kangpokpi district, COTU and Kuki Zo people of the district will not be responsible, but rather the authority concerned will bear the full responsibility." Security along National Highway 2 in Kangpokpi district has been increased due to her expected visit. Since May 2023, ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities have caused over 260 deaths and displaced thousands. The two communities avoid each other's areas, deepening the divide in the State. BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh from the Meitei community visited a relief camp for displaced Kukis in Ukhrul district on December 8, marking the first political leader to cross ethnic lines since the violence began. However, Kuki groups criticized his visit as a political move. Manipur remains under President's Rule since February 2025 after the BJP government resigned amid criticism over its handling of the crisis.
