Ukraine is secretly making its Flamingo cruise missiles in hidden factories to boost its defense. Visitors are blindfolded and told to turn off phones to protect secret locations. Two Fire Point factories, the company behind these weapons, were already attacked. Inside the factories, filming is banned, and workers' faces are kept hidden. Despite attacks, Ukraine is increasing arms production. President Volodymyr Zelensky says over half the country’s frontline weapons are now made locally, including most long-range arms. Ukraine started with Soviet-era weapons but now leads in drones and unmanned systems, aided by Western help. Fire Point’s 33-year-old chief technical officer, Iryna Terekh, explained that the Flamingo missile is painted black "because it eats Russian oil." The missile resembles a World War Two German V1 rocket and has a range of 3,000 km, rivaling the US Tomahawk. Ukraine uses these deep-strike weapons to hit Russia’s war economy. General Oleksandr Syrskyi claimed Ukraine’s long-range attacks have cost Russia over $21.5 billion this year. Special Forces officer Ruslan said their goal is "to reduce the enemy's military capabilities and their economic potential" via hundreds of strikes inside Russian territory. Russia responds with more attacks, including 200 Shahed drones daily, causing power cuts in Ukraine. Fire Point, created after Russia’s 2022 invasion, now makes 200 drones a day, conducting 60% of long-range strikes. Their drones cost about $50,000 each, cheaper than Russian models. Ms Terekh says they source parts locally and avoid components from China and the US, fearing future supply cuts. The US halted much military aid after President Trump’s term ended, leaving Ukraine more reliant on its own resources and European support. Terekh called current peace talks "capitulation talks" and stressed that making weapons internally is "the only way to really provide security guarantees." She hopes Europe learns from Ukraine’s fight and warns other nations would have been conquered under similar attacks.
